World AIDS Day 2017

By | LGBTQI, OUTthink | No Comments

World AIDS Day 2017 World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year. It raises awareness across the world and in the community about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It is a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. Over the past few years, we’ve seen some incredible advancements in the fight against HIV and even steps towards potentially finding a cure. All this is news that is worth getting truly excited about, especially given current estimates see approximately 32 million people globally living with HIV. The fight against HIV and AIDS is not over yet. We have a generation of adults now who have never known a world without the presence of HIV and AIDS. Coupled with the fact that HIV is no longer a death sentence, it seems to be that there has become an increase in the amount of activity that could potentially transmit the virus and an apathy towards the outcome. We need to realise that the fight against HIV and AIDS is not over yet and that we do have the potential, if we all play our part, to eradicate this…

OUTthink Will Be Back In 2018

By | LGBTQI, OUTthink | No Comments

OUTthink Will Be Back In 2018 A little over a year ago, the first episode of the podcast OUTthink was published to the world. The aim of OUTthink was simple; to create more discussion and awareness around the LGBTQIA community and mental health issues. Over the course of the first ‘season’, our topics ranged from discussions on transgender, sexual fluidity, anxiety, shifting friendships, HIV acceptance, the impact of shame, and even a look at how we use comedy as a form of defense mechanism. In each episode, the aim was to have a casual conversation that held no objective other than to explore the topic openly and to consider what advice or insight our guests could offer based on their own experiences. What next for OUTthink? I’d really love to hear from people as to what kinds of topics and guests they would like the podcast to explore next. Our guests tend to fall into two categories; people who are specialists in their area and who can offer us advice or people who have experienced challenges and difficulties and who has a resilience that is inspiring and insightful. If there is one aim I have with OUTthink, it is to…

The Facts About Anxiety and Hypnotherapy

By | Anxiety, Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy | No Comments

The Facts About Anxiety and Hypnotherapy Anxiety, Sabre Tooth Tigers and Smoke Alarms We all have experienced anxiety at some times in our lives. You might have to get up and do a speech and you can feel that nervous energy racing through the body. You might even find that you’re incapable of stopping your mind from telling you about how bad it is going to go and how everyone is going to think you’re an idiot. You’re convinced that you’re going to ‘stuff it up’, only to find that everything turns out to actually go fine. Yet, while you were busy imagining the worst case scenario, your mind-body connection ensured that your body responded in that moment as if the threat was real. In many ways, your mind allowed you to ‘time travel’ into the future, to creatively imagine the worst possible scenario in a way that was so convincing, you believed it to have really happened. In short, your anxiety hypnotised you. Anxiety is a normal part of life though. It is part of the ‘fight or flight’ response that has been hard-wired into our system since the time of primitive man. Look at it this way; back…

POSITIVE CHANGE Campaign 2017

By | LGBTQI, OUTthink | No Comments

POSITIVE CHANGE Campaign 2017 – Hypnosis To Help! Every year, Release Hypnosis runs POSITIVE CHANGE; an opportunity for people to get the change that they want while helping people living with HIV to get the change that they need. This year is no exception. What is POSITIVE CHANGE? The concept is simple; book in a session during December, work on the change that you wish to achieve, pay what you feel the session is worth (terms and conditions apply, refer to the link at the end of the article) and leave the session knowing that your payment is also going towards the Victorian AIDS Council to assist in the increase of awareness of HIV as well as helping those people who are living with HIV. I’ve had very mixed results over the past two years of running the campaign and it has made me aware of the fact that December can often be a difficult time to promote making a positive change in your life. This is the time of year where there are plenty of social gatherings, end of year cheer, drinks, parties; all the things that are likely to trigger vices such as drinking too much, eating too…

It’s Time To Manage My Weight Again…

By | Addiction, Habits, Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, Mindful Eating, Mindfulness, Weight Management | No Comments

It’s Time To Manage My Weight Again Weight Management has always been an important topic to me. When I first started up the Release Hypnosis website a couple of years back, the first blog that I wrote looked at how I lost my weight and how I managed to keep it off. Realistically, I’ve been fairly successful at keeping it off over that time too and I can confidently say that I’ve managed to avoid becoming as heavy as I was then again. Then again, we are always constantly in changing situations and, with that, we can often find that old habits can resurface if we don’t bring an awareness to them. Over the past few months, my weight has begun to creep back on. I’m sure we’re all familiar with that feeling of stepping out of the shower, seeing ourselves in the mirror and feeling like we’re not being the best version of ourselves that we can be. This week, I’m making a change. I’m going back to basics. I’m stepping in on my habits now and making changes before I find myself in a state that makes me feel disappointed with myself, robs me of my self-esteem and…

Phobias: Why Halloween Is More Frightening For Some

By | Phobia | No Comments

Phobias: Why Halloween Is More Frightening For Some While some may picture Halloween as being a time of fancy dress, trick or treat and ghoulish stories, for people who have phobias, Halloween can be a very difficult time. Let me illustrate this point by way of example. A friend of mine was telling me that her phobia of spiders was so strong that she avoids going into supermarkets around Halloween. All the display spider webs and plastic spiders bring her anxiety to such a point that she recalls walking into a supermarket once, spotting a display, screaming in sheer terror and running out of the store. Yes, she admits that it might’ve looked like she was crazy however around Halloween, I am pretty sure if you were to ask your friends, you’ll find at least one person you know who would agree with this experience. Considering that Halloween is meant to be about all those things that bring a sense of terror into our world, it’s easy to understand why there would be some things that may trigger a phobic response. There is even Samhainophobia, which is a fear of Halloween itself! The term Samhainophobia originates from ‘Samhuin’ meaning summer’s…

Mental Health Maintenance During the Same Sex Postal Vote

By | LGBTQI, Mental Health, Mindfulness | No Comments

Maintaining Mental Health During the Same-Sex Postal Vote The internet and media have been flooded with the conversation about marriage equality for the past few years now, however, nothing has compared to the level of exposure it has received over the past few weeks. Along with it has come an alarming amount of anxiety and shame that many had felt they had dealt with and resolved long ago. While we can’t prevent people from voicing their beliefs, we can learn how to ensure we protect and maintain our own mental health and allow ourselves to become mentally stronger and resilient. Since the idea of a marriage equality plebiscite was first presented, there has been strong resistance to it from mental health organisations who were concerned that it would cause mental hardship on the LGBT community. In the past week, many mental health organisations have spoken about the sharp increase on their services from LGBT youth who are struggling with this vicious debate with some organisations having a 20% increase in their calls. While the government promised a ‘civilized debate’, the ability to facilitate this around such a personal topic that people care passionately about was always going to be in…

OUTthink – When Joey Dumped Keane

By | LGBTQI, Loss, Podcast | No Comments

OUTthink – When Joey Dumped Keane (Or When Friends Just Disappear) What did I do? In this episode of OUTthink, we’re going to take a look at what happens when you start to lose friends and you’re not entirely sure why. For most people, their circle of friends is absolutely vital to them. For the LGBT community, who may not always have the support of their families, their friends might be the closest thing they have instead. So what happens when you have friends who suddenly seem to just disappear on you? The ones who just ‘went strange’ and no longer wanted to talk to you? The ones who accused you of being something that you’re completely not? Even the ones who you would’ve said knew you better than anyone else, and then they just vanish? For many people, it can bring up deep-rooted feelings of not fitting in, of being flawed, of not being loveable. For others, it may leave them constantly wondering what they did wrong as they go on an endless search to find meaning to an otherwise meaningless event. Even in this current political climate where the emotions of the LGBT community can be heightened from…

I’ll Show You How To Build a Hypnotherapy Mixer

By | Recording | No Comments

I’ll Show You How To Build a Hypnotherapy Mixer I’m so glad to be able to offer you this webinar on how to build your own hypnotherapy mixer. This is a device that is going to really assist you in delivering sessions to your clients at a whole new level. What’s a hypnotherapy mixer? Good question! Essentially, a hypnotherapy mixer is a small audio mixing device that allows you to deliver your session to your client via a headset and allows them to communicate back via theirs. As it goes through an audio mixer, it also means that you can ‘mix in’ background music, soundscapes or binaural beats as well, offering a very different experience. This could be particularly useful in environments that can be rather noisy and help to block out any other background noises. I know that personally, in my own space, noises from neighboring rooms and businesses, the outside lifts ringing and people loudly walking past can be a real issue to contend with at times. While you could offer the suggestion during hypnosis of ignoring the other noises (in fact, they will only help you to go deeper), it can still be a real conscious distraction…
