Remember what it was like when you first learned Parts Therapy?

Think back for a moment to the first time you learned Parts Therapy.

If you were like me, you may have been excited yet confused about all the possibilities that existed with this technique. What if Parts didn’t come forward? Or what if so many came forward, you were confused about which Part was what?

Over time, as you explored working with Parts Therapy, you may have had your own experiences that you hadn’t thought of when you were learning it. I myself have had instances where Parts have come forward that could not be named or weren’t able to identify their function. When you have experiences like that early on, it can easily put you off utilising Parts Therapy for fear of getting it wrong.

As you can imagine, it is important to continue to fine tune our craft and techniques to ensure that we can provide the best service possible to our clients as well as to give us the confidence and skill that we need to provide a top shelf service.

That’s what Mentors Corner is all about; being able to provide the space to explore these concepts more fully with someone who has a wealth of experience to share and all at a very reasonable price.

“Mentoring is to support and encourage people to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be.”
Eric Parsloe, The Oxford School of Coaching & Mentoring

Our next mentor at “Hypno & Chat therapy – Mentors Corner” is Melanie Canning discussing everything PARTS THERAPY.

A bit about our guest Mentor – Melanie Canning

Melanie works in private practise from offices in Carrum Downs Victoria as well as at Headspace in Frankston. Melanie commenced her experience as a probationary psychology at Odyssey house; a therapeutic community in Lower Plenty where she gained a knowledge and understanding over a period of two years of drug use and dependance.

Melanie was concurrently working at an NGO youth detox in Coburg at this time before leaving both positions to commence working at Albert Rd Clinic; a private psychiatric hospital.

Melanie further refined her knowledge and treatment of patients with severe mental health issues including borderline personality disorder and dissociative identity disorder. From here Melanie gained further experience in the non-government sector and worked to implement a program designed to focus on adults who had diagnosed mental health issues, were homeless, engaged in drug or alcohol use as well as other complex needs.

Melanie then moved on to specialise in drug and alcohol counselling and took a role working with mandated clients before starting a family. On returning to the workforce, Melanie felt there must be something more than what the techniques of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness could offer and she sort an approach that worked at the base of the symptoms people presented with, or from within the issue itself, to dissolve and resolve the underlying angst that people experienced.

Melanie thus moved to complete her clinical training in hypnotherapy at the Academy of Hypnotic Science and completed Gordon Emmerson’s then termed Ego State Therapy. Melanie has fallen in love with the approach taught by Gordon Emmerson which has been recently redefined and renamed Resource Therapy, a name coined after the approach taught by Dr Emmerson grew to develop some fundamental differences to its father approach Ego State Therapy.

Melanie has completed both the foundation and clinical qualification twice as she continues to refine and enhance her own knowledge and techniques within the framework of Resource Therapy. Melanie continues to have ongoing supervision with Dr Emmerson and is passionate about continuing to grow this framework.

Melanie Canning is a psychologist, resource therapist and hypnotherapist, completing her resource therapy training of 100 hours plus with Dr Gordon Emmerson. Melanie Canning has completely embraced the world of Resource Therapy and has incorporated it fully into her private practice as her primary mode of therapy. Melanie has found success utilising resource therapy with presentations that range from clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, anorexia, dissociative identity disorder and borderline personality disorder through to anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression and drug and alcohol use, gambling and other addictions. Melanie is a qualified trainer and supervisor with Resource Therapy International.

What to expect from Mentor’s Corner

If you’re currently training or have completed your training as a hypnotherapist, these regular meet-ups are an excellent way for you to ask the questions you may not have had the opportunity to ask at the time.

Come along to these meet ups and tap into the minds of professional therapists who have been doing their craft for years. You’ll be able to pick up new spins on classic technique and perhaps consider ways around issues you (or others) may have experienced in utilising these techniques themselves.

This is really an opportunity for you to explore, experiment, and learn more!

About Lawrence Akers

My approach is simple; I work with clients to determine what they want to get rid of, what they want instead and what that gap in their resources are that is preventing them from doing it. My focus is not just on motivation but on the capability to do it as well.

Thanks for a great morning! I really enjoyed learning more about Parts and Resource Therapy. The way Melanie explained the process was clear and easy to follow, I really appreciated that she took the time to answer everybody’s questions in detail.
I got a lot out of it!
