OUTthink – Daniel Witthaus – Remote Rural LGBT

By | OUTthink | No Comments

OUTthink: A Chat with Daniel Witthaus on Remote Rural LGBT A bit about Daniel OUTthink is back for another season and to get the ball rolling, we’re chatting with the incredible Daniel Witthaus. Daniel has been someone that I’ve been watching for a while now as I think his work is just extraordinary. He is an author, a speaker and the Founder and CEO of the NICHE (National Institute for Challenging Homophobia Education). I think most impressively, and largely due to the ambition and tenacity that it shows, Daniel went all around Australia to remote communities aiming to challenge and change homophobic views and to assist local communities develop resources to support regional LGBTQIA people – and he did this ‘one cuppa at a time’. For more information on NICHE or to show your support to the organisation, you can check out their website. About OUTthink – An LGBT Podcast OUTthink is a fortnightly podcast aimed at shining a light into topics of mental health and mental wellbeing relating to the LGBTQIA+ community. As a community, we need to be able to discuss topics that are uniquely related to the gay, lesbian, transgender and the many diverse labels in-between, that…

Midsumma Festival Has Begun – OUTthink Update

By | Addiction, Anxiety, Depression, LGBTQI | No Comments

Midsumma Festival Has Begun – OUTthink Update Midsumma Festival Now is the perfect time to be in Melbourne as the annual Midsumma Festival has begun. The Midsumma Carnival last Sunday was an excellent opportunity to get out, enjoy the sun, and to take in the diversity that exists within our local LGBTQIA community. It can often be all too easy to forget that the LGBTQIA community is more than just a handful of gay clubs and the immediate circle that we associate with. It’s event likes Midsumma that help to get us out and about and to reconnect with our community. The importance of connection Research has shown the value and importance of connection to our own mental well being. It reminds us that we belong to ‘a tribe’ and that we can find people who understand and empathise with us, worts and all. Without this connection, we can often find mental health issues arising including stress, depression and anxiety, and even addiction. With that in mind, and despite Melbourne’s notoriously unreliable weather, go on and get out there. Connect with our community. Enjoy the sun and get the Vitamin D. OUTthink Update It still is a little way off…

World AIDS Day 2017

By | LGBTQI, OUTthink | No Comments

World AIDS Day 2017 World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year. It raises awareness across the world and in the community about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It is a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. Over the past few years, we’ve seen some incredible advancements in the fight against HIV and even steps towards potentially finding a cure. All this is news that is worth getting truly excited about, especially given current estimates see approximately 32 million people globally living with HIV. The fight against HIV and AIDS is not over yet. We have a generation of adults now who have never known a world without the presence of HIV and AIDS. Coupled with the fact that HIV is no longer a death sentence, it seems to be that there has become an increase in the amount of activity that could potentially transmit the virus and an apathy towards the outcome. We need to realise that the fight against HIV and AIDS is not over yet and that we do have the potential, if we all play our part, to eradicate this…

OUTthink Will Be Back In 2018

By | LGBTQI, OUTthink | No Comments

OUTthink Will Be Back In 2018 A little over a year ago, the first episode of the podcast OUTthink was published to the world. The aim of OUTthink was simple; to create more discussion and awareness around the LGBTQIA community and mental health issues. Over the course of the first ‘season’, our topics ranged from discussions on transgender, sexual fluidity, anxiety, shifting friendships, HIV acceptance, the impact of shame, and even a look at how we use comedy as a form of defense mechanism. In each episode, the aim was to have a casual conversation that held no objective other than to explore the topic openly and to consider what advice or insight our guests could offer based on their own experiences. What next for OUTthink? I’d really love to hear from people as to what kinds of topics and guests they would like the podcast to explore next. Our guests tend to fall into two categories; people who are specialists in their area and who can offer us advice or people who have experienced challenges and difficulties and who has a resilience that is inspiring and insightful. If there is one aim I have with OUTthink, it is to…

OUTthink – When Joey Dumped Keane

By | LGBTQI, Loss, Podcast | No Comments

OUTthink – When Joey Dumped Keane (Or When Friends Just Disappear) What did I do? In this episode of OUTthink, we’re going to take a look at what happens when you start to lose friends and you’re not entirely sure why. For most people, their circle of friends is absolutely vital to them. For the LGBT community, who may not always have the support of their families, their friends might be the closest thing they have instead. So what happens when you have friends who suddenly seem to just disappear on you? The ones who just ‘went strange’ and no longer wanted to talk to you? The ones who accused you of being something that you’re completely not? Even the ones who you would’ve said knew you better than anyone else, and then they just vanish? For many people, it can bring up deep-rooted feelings of not fitting in, of being flawed, of not being loveable. For others, it may leave them constantly wondering what they did wrong as they go on an endless search to find meaning to an otherwise meaningless event. Even in this current political climate where the emotions of the LGBT community can be heightened from…

OUTthink – Talking About Marriage Equality with Joe Busuttil

By | LGBTQI, Mental Health, OUTthink, Podcast | No Comments

OUTthink – Talking About Marriage Equality with Joe Busuttil OUTthink returns just as the debate on same sex marriage heats up While we only took a short break, the reignition of the marriage equality debate proved to be something truly worth discussing. Even the Australian Medical Association recognises marriage equality as being a physical and mental health issue. For Joe and I, the discussion isn’t so much about wanting to marry as it is around being seen as equal and able to explore that option if we decided that was what we wanted to do. For many LGBTQIA couples in long term relationship, the ability to have marriage equality is going to see them have the same rights and experiences as their non-LGBTQIA family and friends. The debate leading up to the postal vote is only going to get nastier and nastier, and it will be wise for LGBTQIA folk to distance themselves from some of the more hateful and personal attacks that they may encounter over the course of the next few months. Time out from social media and being able to recognise that the insecurities being projected say more about the people making the claims than them themselves…
