How to Recover from Porn Addiction: Tips from a Clinical Hypnotherapist

As a hypnotherapist, I’ve worked with many men to show them how to recover from porn addiction. In fact, the past 18 months or so has seen a dramatic increase in men struggling with this issue, and it is showing no sign of slowing down.

It’s a challenging addiction to overcome, but it’s definitely possible.

In this blog, I’ll share some tips and insights on how to recover from porn addiction.

Understand Porn Addiction

The first step to overcoming porn addiction is to understand it.

Porn addiction is a type of behavioral addiction. It’s like any other addiction, such as drugs, alcohol, or gambling, in that it hijacks the reward center in the brain.

This means that when you watch porn, your brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that gives you a sense of pleasure and reward.

Over time, your brain becomes dependent on this dopamine release and you start to crave it.

Additionally, the neural pathways begin to grow stronger each time this behaviour is repeated, building associations to images, locations, and settings.

For instance, who would've thought that 'being home alone', or even a certain time of day can contribute towards being triggered to use porn? And yet, it can.

Use Mindfulness

One of the most effective ways to recover from porn addiction is to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of being present and fully engaged in the moment. It’s about paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment.

Mindfulness can help you break the cycle of addiction by helping you become more aware of your triggers and cravings.

When you’re mindful, you’re better able to recognize when you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or lonely, which are common triggers for porn addiction.

By being aware of your triggers, you can learn to respond to them in healthier ways, such as going for a walk, calling a friend, or practicing relaxation techniques.

Try Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for overcoming addiction. It works by accessing the subconscious mind, where your habits and beliefs are stored. Through hypnosis, you can reprogram your subconscious mind to create new habits and beliefs that support your recovery.

Hypnotherapy can be especially effective for porn addiction because it helps you break the associations between porn and pleasure. When you watch porn, your brain associates it with pleasure, which reinforces the addiction. Through hypnotherapy, you can break this association and create new associations that support your recovery.

Of course, there is no one size fits all approach that works for everyone however many people who try hypnosis can recognise early on if it may be a suitable approach for them.

Build a Support System

Recovering from porn addiction can be challenging, but it’s much easier with a support system. You don’t have to do it alone.

Reach out to friends or family members who are supportive of your recovery.

Join a support group, either online or in-person. You can also seek the help of a professional, such as a therapist or a hypnotherapist.

Having a support system can provide you with encouragement, accountability, and a safe space to talk about your struggles.

Practice Self-Care

Self-care is essential for recovering from porn addiction. When you’re taking care of yourself, you’re less likely to turn to porn as a coping mechanism.

Self-care can take many forms, such as exercise, healthy eating, getting enough sleep, or practicing relaxation techniques. Find what works for you and make it a priority.

Create a Plan

Finally, it’s important to have a plan for your recovery. This plan should include specific goals and strategies for achieving them.

Set realistic goals for yourself, such as reducing your porn use by a certain percentage or going a certain amount of time without watching porn. Identify the strategies that work best for you, such as mindfulness, hypnotherapy, or building a support system.

Having a plan can provide you with direction and motivation, and it can help you track your progress.

Overcoming Porn Addiction Has To Start With You Taking Action

Recovering from porn addiction is possible, but it takes time, effort, and a willingness to change.

Nothing changes if nothing changes. If you find that pornography is having a greater hold on your life than you would like, you need to take action to make change.

By understanding porn addiction, practicing mindfulness, trying hypnotherapy, building a support system, practicing self-care, and creating a plan, you can successfully overcome your addiction to porn.

Remember, you don’t have to do it alone. Reach out for help and support, and be kind to yourself along the way.

It’s a journey, but with the right tools and mindset, you can achieve freedom from porn addiction and live a fulfilling life.
