What Does That Smoking Habit Want For You?

By Addiction, Habits, Parts Therapy, Smoking Cessation

What does that smoking habit want for you? Part of you wants to smoke and part of you wants to quit As with any form of habit that can be perceived as ‘bad’ for you, there is often an internal conflict going on within a person as to why they maintain that habit. Smoking is absolutely the classic example here as nearly everyone who comes to see me about becoming a non-smoker has studied up on ‘the facts’ around smoking and they know all the reasons why they should quit but seem to struggle with fully embracing their identity as a non-smoker. Some may even recognise that inner-conflict and be confused by it, saying that as a logical, rational adult, they should be able to take control of the situation and to make that decision to give up that smoking habit and yet they just find it hard. Perhaps what they need to really look at is the intention behind that part of them that has the smoking habit. Each part has a positive intention Often when we sit down and begin to talk to that part that has been maintaining the smoking habit, we discover that it has a…

Book Review: Resource Therapy Primer

Book Review: Resource Therapy Primer Gordon Emmerson, PhD It’s been quite some time since I last experienced Resource Therapy. Going back in time (yes, metaphor intended), I was studying my Diploma of Hypnotherapy when I had the pleasure of Gordon Emmerson himself showing our class an introduction to the therapy over a weekend. As you would expect from someone who has written and taught so much of it, he made it look effortlessly easy. I recall my first ‘attempt’ at utilizing Resource Therapy with a client. Everything seemed to be going according to plan, vivifying the experience and bringing in the introject (more on these after) in order to release his expression only to find that, instead of a ‘you were never there for me’ moment, it was an ‘I love you’ moment. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go! In that moment, I quickly improvised to allow him to know that this love will always be with him, to support him and guide him through difficult times. Phew! Only recently, I had begun to feel a fascination with the therapy again. I remember my dear friend and fellow hypnotherapist Joe Busuttil saying to me once that, after a…

How does hypnotherapy work with weight loss? “It seems like no matter what I do, I just can’t seem to lose the weight.” If you were to come up with a ‘top five’ of presenting issues that people approach hypnosis for assistance to change, weight loss would be up near the top. For many people, hypnosis has proven to be really beneficial in their desire to manage their weight successfully with some saying that they found that they no longer felt the desire to eat the quantity that they had before or that their desire to eat the ‘problem foods’ simply seemed to disappear. While the claims can be very appealing, it still doesn’t explain how it works and so I wanted to take a moment to talk about what your hypnotherapist would be looking for in meeting with you and what approaches they may decide to take. Of course, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to using hypnosis for losing weight. Consider this; if there was one absolutely sure-fire, guaranteed way to lose weight quickly, easily and permanently, probably every other approach would simply disappear through redundancy. The fact that we are all different human beings who have come to…
