Here Is Why I Don’t Do New Year’s Resolutions

By Addiction, Anxiety, Habits, Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, Motivation, Smoking Cessation, Uncategorized, Weight Management

Here Is Why I Don’t Do New Year’s Resolutions This time of year, your social media news-feed is likely to be inundated by posts about New Years Resolutions. It’s a great time of year to tell everyone how you’re disappointed with yourself for [insert problem behaviour] and how you’re going to stop doing [insert problem behaviour] in the new year. While it’s nice to have a resolution, rarely does it actually work with many people abandoning them within the first week. Being real with you for a second, even I have been guilty of flooding social media walls with marketing about ‘new year’s resolutions’ because there are still many people who subscribe to them. Regardless of my own personal beliefs, it is obviously a wise move to let people know I might be able to help them and I do stand by the benefit of getting additional support to achieve them. Statistically, most people will fail with their new years resolutions and it tends to feel more of a token gesture about which ‘flaw’ to fix than anything else. When we break it down, what we’re really looking at here is habitual behaviour and how to change the behaviour which…

Surviving Christmas 2018

By Anxiety, Depression, Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, Mental Health, Mindfulness, Shame, Weight Management

Surviving Christmas 2018 While many people look forward to the end of year celebrations, there are also many other people who struggle to survive and experience stress, anxiety and depression from the Christmas period. For some, Christmas can be a costly experience that impacts on their financial well being. It can be an overwhelming period for people who live with anxiety and depression. It can be a period where high expectations are built, both by ourselves and from others, which can often be hard to meet. It can be a period where we eat too much, drink too much, or just party too much in general, leaving us feeling out of shape, fatigued and not feeling our best. Don’t get me wrong; it can also be a time of joy, happiness, child like wonder and an opportunity for harmonious families to get together. For every joy of love, peace and happy families though, there are an equal number who simply wish Christmas would pass quickly. While not necessarily related, there has been recent research to indicate that Christmas music may not be good for your mental health. Now, I’m not sure if this is 100% true or not but it…

To Script Or Not To Script… That Is The Question

By Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, Smoking Cessation, Weight Management

To Script Or Not To Script… That Is The Question Or a review of ‘Advanced Ericksonian Scripts’ by Dan Jones The Script Debate Within the hypnotherapy community, there is a lot of debate about the use of scripts. One of the key arguments against the use of hypnosis scripts is simply that they’re too generic and too ‘one-size-fits-all’, whereas what hypnotherapy clients will often require is a more tailored-made approach. Another concern with using scripts is that they can’t go into more advanced, interactive techniques that perhaps require a hypnoanalytical approach. When a hypnotherapist learns his craft, and provided that he has come from a reputable training organisation, there is the expectation that they should be comfortable with techniques such as Parts / Ego State Therapy, Regression, Ideomotor Responses, Fast Rewind and other techniques that could be attempted via a script but really do need more flexibility to achieve success with a client. Think of it a bit like the old ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ books where, depending on what route you wished to take, you would turn to a different page to continue the story. On the flipside of this, there is certainly some use in scripts and with…

Maintaining Mental Health and Surviving Christmas

By Addiction, Anxiety, Counselling, Depression, Habits, Mental Health, Mindful Eating, Mindfulness, Therapy, Weight Management

Maintaining Mental Health and Surviving Christmas As I wrote last year, while Christmas is a time of joy and family for many, it can also be a source of pain, discomfort, and anxiety for others. For those who have lost or have no family, it can be a period of sadness with constant reminders of a ‘family Christmas’ lurking everywhere. For those who suffer from anxiety, it can be an extremely stressful period as they consider if this overload to the senses (or to their wallet) may leave them feeling apprehensive and on edge. Even just as a ritual in itself, Christmas can potentially trigger a lot of uncomfortable feelings for people that they would rather not experience annually. Then you have those people who are trying to maintain a healthier lifestyle. For those who are trying to lose weight or reduce their drinking or stop smoking, Christmas can prove to be a series of obstacles making their end goal just that little bit more challenging. Let’s face it, you would need to be a saint to get through Christmas without at least a handful of moments of self-indulgence. For some people, giving into this temptation may leave them feeling…

It’s Time To Manage My Weight Again…

By Addiction, Habits, Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, Mindful Eating, Mindfulness, Weight Management

It’s Time To Manage My Weight Again Weight Management has always been an important topic to me. When I first started up the Release Hypnosis website a couple of years back, the first blog that I wrote looked at how I lost my weight and how I managed to keep it off. Realistically, I’ve been fairly successful at keeping it off over that time too and I can confidently say that I’ve managed to avoid becoming as heavy as I was then again. Then again, we are always constantly in changing situations and, with that, we can often find that old habits can resurface if we don’t bring an awareness to them. Over the past few months, my weight has begun to creep back on. I’m sure we’re all familiar with that feeling of stepping out of the shower, seeing ourselves in the mirror and feeling like we’re not being the best version of ourselves that we can be. This week, I’m making a change. I’m going back to basics. I’m stepping in on my habits now and making changes before I find myself in a state that makes me feel disappointed with myself, robs me of my self-esteem and…

Book Review: The Holistic Guide to Hypnotherapy

By Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, NLP, Self Hypnosis, Weight Management

Book Review: The Holistic Guide to Hypnotherapy Steve Webster On the cover of ‘The Holistic Guide to Hypnotherapy’ is a star burst graphic that proclaims proudly, ‘The Hypnotherapy Bible!’ It isn’t wrong. You would be hard pressed to find something that is more thoroughly researched and compiled, and that manages to cover so many topics even just in Volume 1. At 863 pages in length, you can’t say that Steve Webster skimps on any details. What I loved about this text is that it is literally crammed full of golden nuggets of tips, techniques, and insight. You can tell that Steve is very passionate about the world of hypnotherapy and the level of depth that he goes into on many of the topics presented in the book really highlights that. Take for instance the topic of inductions. This is potentially one of the most comprehensive and thorough texts on inductions that I’ve come across to date. Not only does he go into detail about inductions themselves but also about how to access what kind of client you have in front of you and what kind of induction is going to best work with that type of client. While heavily influenced…

How Does Hypnotherapy Work With Weight Loss?

By Habits, Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, Mindful Eating, Parts Therapy, Shame, Weight ManagementNo Comments

How does hypnotherapy work with weight loss? “It seems like no matter what I do, I just can’t seem to lose the weight.” If you were to come up with a ‘top five’ of presenting issues that people approach hypnosis for assistance to change, weight loss would be up near the top. For many people, hypnosis has proven to be really beneficial in their desire to manage their weight successfully with some saying that they found that they no longer felt the desire to eat the quantity that they had before or that their desire to eat the ‘problem foods’ simply seemed to disappear. While the claims can be very appealing, it still doesn’t explain how it works and so I wanted to take a moment to talk about what your hypnotherapist would be looking for in meeting with you and what approaches they may decide to take. Of course, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to using hypnosis for losing weight. Consider this; if there was one absolutely sure-fire, guaranteed way to lose weight quickly, easily and permanently, probably every other approach would simply disappear through redundancy. The fact that we are all different human beings who have come to…

Don’t Think You Have Enough Self-Control? Try Believing That You Do.

By Habits, Mindful Eating, Motivation, Weight ManagementNo Comments

Don’t think you have enough self-control? Try believing that you do Elliot Berkman, University of Oregon Around this time each year, my family and I, as well as Jews around the world, celebrate Passover. Like many Jewish holidays, this one features a range of symbolic foods and eating a large meal. And like many Jewish holidays, this one ends with me fielding the mostly rhetorical question from my relatives, “Why did I eat so much?”, quickly followed by a lament along the lines of, “I have no self-control around food!” This is a relatable feeling. We’ve all had an experience with overeating at some point in our lives. But is this failure of self-control caused by not having “enough” self-control, or could other factors like beliefs and mindset matter even more? Self-control is not fixed Many people hold the view that self-control is a quality that remains stable throughout a person’s life, similar to IQ or personality. Research in psychology has also generally supported this view. For example, a famous experiment showed that children who were able to resist eating a marshmallow for a brief period of time in favor of getting two marshmallows later went on to do better…
