Book Review: ACT Made Simple

By | ACT, Mindfulness | No Comments

Book Review: ACT Made Simple Dr Russ Harris I remember a few years ago when I was first introduced to ACT. I have to admit, I struggled with it initially. All this stuff about fusion and observing your self and rich, full and meaningful lives; it all felt a bit much. Fast forward a few years and several training sessions later and I have to say that ACT is transformative in its approach and has continued to be a source of revelation for many of the clients that I’ve worked with as well. ‘ACT Made Simple’ might be slightly deceptive in its title. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or ACT to its friends) might come across as quite straight forward, however, putting ACT into practice can sometimes highlight some of the subtle yet challenging skills that come into play during the average session. With that, Dr. Russ Harris does have a remarkable knack for writing content that is both easy to read and to understand. The beauty of ‘ACT Made Simple’ is in the beautifully playful way in which Dr. Harris can easily engage the reader and offer them insight. ACT itself is often built on experiential exercises so even the…

The Benefits of Mindfulness

By | ACT, Mindful Eating, Mindfulness, Weight Management | No Comments

For the longest while, I couldn’t understand what all the fuss about this ‘mindfulness’ was. Was it the latest buzzword that everyone needed to get on board with? How could it be useful in losing weight, or reducing stress and anxiety, or any of the multitude of things that others had claimed?   My first experience of mindfulness was an interesting one. I was doing my Cert IV in Hypnotherapy at the time. The lecturer asked us to close our eyes and to simply observe the sounds that we could hear. I can recall her saying, ‘allowing the sounds to come to you… holding no judgement… just noticing them like you were hearing them for the first time ever.’ Even in that moment, something began to shift. It was like trying on a new hat; I had to consider what it was like to be curious again and to hear something new for the first time. I would later go on to learn the value of curiosity in learning, exploring and playing. She then asked for us to focus solely on the breath. Perhaps we could notice the feeling of the air coming in and going down our throats. Perhaps…

Why I Created OUTthink.

By | LGBTQI, OUTthink, Podcast, Shame | No Comments

Why I Created OUTthink – An LGBTQIA Podcast It’s an exciting day for me as, today, I publish my first podcast, ‘OUTthink’. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to sit down and explore topics relating to the LGBTQIA community with people who can offer an amazing insight. Within those conversations, there are stories of shame, stigma, alienation, abandonment and, most importantly, self-acceptance and self-love. These are stories of people who have been thrown into some unexpected and difficult situations and have managed to make their way to acceptance, understanding, empathy and pride. The reason why I wanted to do this podcast was simple; people often don’t put mental health into the spotlight, let alone some of the added issues that come with belonging to the LGBTQIA community. When we are faced with unresolved shame and stigma in our lives, what holds it in place is keeping it secret. Within these podcasts, we allow the thoughts, feelings and emotions that are often not discussed to be brought to light, to be shared with the world and to allow those often uncomfortable thoughts and feelings to be released. Within these podcasts, you may hear a…
